Respite Care
Respite care provides short-term relief for primary caregivers. Taking care of an aging or sick family member can be rewarding but, at the same time, it can be physically exhausting and emotionally draining. Caregivers feed, clean up, make meals, change sheets, and offer comfort and emotional support. It can be stressful and it's normal to need a break.
Respite care for a few hours a day or a few days a week can be arranged at home, in a healthcare facility or in an adult center.
Generally speaking, in-home respite care involves the following types of services for the more impaired older person:
-
Companion services to entertain or just visit with the senior when he or she is lonely and wants company.
-
Homemaker services to assist with housekeeping chores, preparing meals, or shopping.
-
Personal care services to help the individual bathe, get dressed, go to the bathroom, and/or exercise.
-
Skilled care services to address the individual’s medical needs, such as when administering medications.
